Should You Talk About Depression at Work?

Mental health challenges have a way of affecting all areas of life-  including work. It is difficult to set aside feelings of pain, depression or panic for 9 hours a day at work. This means that many people are struggling to cope with their mental health challenges while being fully engaged and productive at work.

Mental health issues or disorders are a silent and challenging struggle for many people, mainly because of the stigma often associated with them. In reality, work environments are not welcoming for people with mental health challenges, because these environments do not often reward these perceived weaknesses. But this can change when there are supportive corporate wellness programs in place at work. Employers and other employees typically do not know what struggles the people they spend 40 hours every week with are facing. However, when companies start corporate wellness programs, they are encouraged to be open with their struggles, or at least develop healthier coping strategies. 

Mental health is crucial to an effective, productive, and safe workplace. Whether employees disclose their mental health conditions or not, these conditions affect their lives and work performance.

4. Behavior Disorders such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder.

5. Mood Disorders such as Depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Bipolar Disorder.

6. Eating Disorder such as Anorexia, Nervosa, Bulimia and Binge Eating.

Many employees who have a mental health disorder do not get treated for it, or know the options available. By providing resources and encouraging a safe space, the culture and mindset of your company will improve.

Addressing mental health issues at work may seem intimating; however, it is the healthiest choice for the employer and the employees. Employers who are prepared to transform their companies need to take practical steps by adopting corporate wellness programs.

Corporate wellness programs and created to support and promote a holistic approach to employees' wellness by creating an organizational culture of health. Employees will be more educated on creating healthy habits and sticking to the mission of the wellness program.
